Madeira Workshop 2023
23-30 April
Its breath-taking landscapes offer a huge variety of opportunities for stunning photography, with spectacular mountains, mist-shrouded forest, and beautiful coastlines. Discover and capture the incredible scenery of this magical island during a week-long workshop in the company of two highly-experienced photographers.
WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?
For the novice to experienced photographer and everyone in between. Your actual skill level doesn’t matter, what does matter is that you have an DSLR or mirrorless camera - and a tripod. There are only 6 spots available. This is so there will be enough time to give everyone personal advice and answer questions. With two experienced instructors, our intention is not only to provide a memorable experience, but also to share our knowledge and passion for the skill of photography and photo editing.
You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness for this workshop. Some locations are easily accessible, others will involve a hike, and some of the routes involve quite a bit of gradient! You will of course be able to opt out of parts of the workshop if you decide you would prefer some down-time.
What to expect?
Madeira is a beautiful island, with lots to see.
There will be no set itinerary for this trip as we will be keeping a close eye on weather forecasts to ensure we have the best conditions for specific locations. However, we would plan on capturing sunrise and sunset in both coastal and mountainous locations, as well as waterfalls and forest. This will necessarily involve some early starts, and some late nights.
Every day will be dedicated to photography, and our aim will be to guide, to educate, to inspire and to provide you with an unforgettable experience. We will travel all over the island to bring you to the most beautiful locations but we will take the time to improve your photography and ensure that you gain knowledge and come away with images you can be proud of.

what to bring
- A sense of humour and a willingness to learn!
- A DSLR with manual mode, a sturdy tripod.
- Ideal lenses would be a Wide Angle (e.g. Full frame 14-30 or 16-35mm, Crop Sensor 10-20mm or similar) and a mid-range zoom such as a 24-70mm (FF) or 18-55mm (crop sensor).
- A longer telephoto lens could prove useful but is not essential.
- ND (Neutral Density) filters and a Polarising filter will definitely come in useful if you have them – instruction in their use will be provided if necessary.
- You will also need good walking shoes/boots, warm socks, a waterproof layer and thermals for the mountains (woolly hat, gloves, extra layers etc).
- We will be doing evening and (conditions permitting) night shoots, so bring a head torch – one that has a red-light mode advised.
- The weather in Madeira in April can vary from very warm at sea level to very cold (with snow!) up in the mountains, so come prepared for such climate variations.
- There is a private pool at the accommodation and, weather permitting, you may wish to avail of some down-time there, so consider bringing swim gear and sun cream.
